The short version
Horizon Overdrive is mostly an offline game, and we collect as little as we can. Your saves stay on your device (and in your platform's cloud saves, if you use them). If you use the online leaderboards, we store your best times against an anonymous ID, plus your platform account ID so we can show you your friends' times — and you can switch that off or erase it from SETTINGS ▸ PRIVACY. Online races run through Epic Online Services. Players on public test branches can choose to send us anonymous performance reports. We have no adverts, no analytics trackers, and we never sell your data.
1. Who we are
Saris Technology Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 16116406), registered office 2 Rectory Croft, Church Lawton, Cheshire, ST7 3FE, United Kingdom, is the controller of the personal data described here ("we", "us").
Contact us about privacy at contact.us@saristechnology.co.uk, or by post at the address above.
2. What this policy covers
This policy covers the video game Horizon Overdrive on every platform (the "Game") and the online services we run for it. The store or platform you play on (for example Steam, the Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store, PlayStation or Nintendo) also collects data about you under its own privacy policy, which we do not control.
3. What we collect, and why
Playing offline. Your progress, settings, controls and car liveries are saved in files on your device. We do not receive them. If your platform offers cloud saves (for example Steam Cloud), the platform copies these files to its servers under its own privacy policy.
Online leaderboards (on by default; switch off in SETTINGS ▸ PRIVACY). When you finish a route, the Game sends us:
- an anonymous ID created for your copy of the Game;
- your platform account ID (for example your Steam ID), stored privately and used only to show "VS YOUR FRIENDS" boards and to stop one player appearing as several;
- your best time for that route, with the car, score, route completion, top speed and the Game's version number;
- the public name shown beside your time — currently always shown as PLAYER unless the Game lets you choose one;
- when you view a friends board, the platform IDs of your platform friends, so we can find their times. We do not store your friends list.
Why: to run the leaderboards you asked to take part in (our legitimate interest in providing a feature of the Game you chose to use, and in keeping the boards fair). We may hide times that look like cheating or a bug.
If you switch online leaderboards off, the Game stops sending times and does not create an online ID for you. ERASE MY ONLINE TIMES (SETTINGS ▸ PRIVACY) deletes all your times and the link between your anonymous ID and your platform account.
Online races. Online lobbies and races use Epic Online Services ("EOS"), provided by Epic Games, Inc. To let you join, your platform vouches for you and EOS creates a game-specific ID linked to your platform account. Other players in your lobby see your platform display name. During a race, the Game connects players' devices to each other (directly or through Epic's relays), which means other players' devices may see your IP address, as with most online multiplayer games. Epic processes this data under its own privacy policy. If the Game ever asks you to sign in with an Epic account, it will tell you, and it will ask you in the Game before using your Epic friends list.
Why: to provide online multiplayer that you choose to use.
Test-branch performance reports (public test branches only, and only if you agree when asked). Players who opt in to a test version of the Game may send us one short summary per session: loading times, frame rates and stutters, hardware (graphics card and driver, processor, memory, operating system, display, type of drive), graphics settings, counts of errors, and for the three most frequent kinds of error, the first line of one error, cut to 80 characters with any file paths removed. It is linked only to a random ID created for that installation — not to your platform account, your name, or your leaderboard ID. The released version of the Game never sends these reports.
Why: your consent, which you can withdraw at any time in the Game's settings; we use the reports only to find and fix performance problems.
Contacting us. If you email us, we keep your email and what you sent so we can reply. Why: our legitimate interest in answering you.
Reports and moderation. Other players in an online race see your car, including its livery. If you report something, or something you shared is reported, we keep the report, a copy of the content as it was, the platform account IDs involved, our decision and any appeal. If we restrict your sharing, we keep a record of it linked to your platform account ID so the restriction can work. Why: our legitimate interest in keeping the Game safe, and our legal duties under online safety law.
4. What we do not collect
- We do not show adverts and do not use advertising or analytics trackers.
- The Game does not send crash reports, and does not send Epic the engine's hardware and usage data.
- We do not collect your name, email address, payment details, location or contacts through the Game. Purchases are handled entirely by the store you buy from.
- We do not sell or rent personal data, or share it for cross-context behavioural advertising.
- The Game has no text or voice chat.
- Do Not Track. We do not track you across other websites, games or services, so the Game and our website behave the same whether or not your browser or device sends a "Do Not Track" or Global Privacy Control signal.
- We do not make decisions about you by automated means that have legal or similarly significant effects. Two kinds of decision are automatic: hiding a leaderboard time that looks like cheating or a bug, and a temporary restriction on sharing content after several different players report it. You can appeal either, and a person will review it. A permanent restriction is always decided by a person.
- You never have to give us personal data to play. If you switch online leaderboards off and do not play online, the Game sends us nothing about you, and everything else in it still works.
5. Who we share it with
- Supabase, Inc. hosts our leaderboard and test-report databases on our behalf (a processor acting on our instructions). Supabase's servers log the IP address of each connection for a short period for security; we do not store IP addresses ourselves.
- Epic Games, Inc. provides Epic Online Services for online play (see section 3).
- Your platform (for example Valve for Steam) provides your account, friends list, achievements and cloud saves.
- Other players see your leaderboard times and public name, and your display name in online lobbies.
- Authorities, if the law requires it, or to protect the rights and safety of players or ourselves.
- A buyer, if the Game or our business is sold, on terms that keep this policy's protections.
6. How long we keep it
| data | kept for |
|---|---|
| leaderboard times and IDs | while the leaderboard runs, or until you press ERASE MY ONLINE TIMES |
| test-branch performance reports | 90 days after the last report from that installation |
| emails to us | as long as needed to deal with your message, then up to 2 years |
| reports, moderation decisions and sharing restrictions | while any restriction lasts, then 1 year |
| connection logs at Supabase | a short period set by Supabase for security |
When we close an online service, we delete its data within 90 days.
7. Your rights
Under UK and EU data protection law you can ask us to: give you a copy of your data; correct it; delete it; restrict or object to how we use it; and give it to you in a portable format. Where we rely on consent, you can withdraw it at any time.
Deleting your data is self-service. Use ERASE MY ONLINE TIMES in SETTINGS ▸ PRIVACY; it deletes your times and the link to your platform account straight away. If the Game is no longer installed, reinstall it and sign in with the same platform account to do so. Test-branch reports delete themselves after 90 days, and your saves are files on your own device. Step-by-step instructions are at https://saristechnology.co.uk/horizonoverdrive/delete-data/.
For your other rights, contact us using the details in section 1. Because we hold no names or emails from the Game, we may ask for details that let us find your data. We will reply within one month.
You can complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk, 0303 123 1113) or your local data protection authority — but please contact us first so we can try to help.
8. Where your data is stored
Our leaderboard and test-report databases are hosted by Supabase on Amazon Web Services servers in Frankfurt, Germany (region eu-central-1), so the data is stored inside the European Economic Area. UK law recognises the EEA as giving personal data adequate protection.
Supabase, Inc. is a US company. Where Supabase or its sub-processors access the data from outside the UK or EEA (for example to provide support or keep the service secure), that transfer is covered by the safeguards in Supabase's data processing terms: the EU Standard Contractual Clauses and the UK International Data Transfer Addendum.
Epic Games and your platform store and process data in their own locations under their own privacy policies.
9. Security
Leaderboard and report data are reached only through narrow, checked functions; the link between your anonymous ID and your platform account cannot be read by anyone through the Game's public connection. Only we can read test reports. No system is perfectly secure, and we will tell you and the regulator if a breach puts you at risk, as the law requires.
10. Children
The Game is designed with privacy-protective defaults: leaderboard names are anonymous, there is no chat, and we do not ask for your age, name or contact details. Online features are controlled by your platform's parental controls. If you are a parent, you can delete your child's online times with ERASE MY ONLINE TIMES on their device, and stop any more being sent by switching ONLINE LEADERBOARDS off.
11. Changes to this policy
If we change how we use personal data, we will update this policy, change the "last updated" date, and, where the change is significant, tell you in the Game or on its store page before it takes effect.
